Dragon News No. 2 2010 "60 years of friendship" 
In May, 1950, Sweden became the first Western country to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. When Sweden's first ambassador, Torsten Hammarström, handed over his letter of credentials in June 1950, he was received by Chairman Mao Zedong personally, which was quite unusual, and a sign that China attached great importance to this diplomatic breakthrough.
